REVIEW- The Sweet Gum Tree by Katherine Allred

Sweet tea, corn bread, and soup beans-everyday fare for eight-year-old Alix French, the precocious darling of a respected southern family. But nothing was ordinary about the day she met ten-year-old Nick Anderson, a boy from the wrong side of town. Armed with only a tin of bee balm and steely determination, Alix treats the raw evidence of a recent beating that mars his back, an act that changes both of their lives forever. Through childhood disasters and teenage woes they cling together as friendship turns to love. The future looks rosy until the fateful night when Frank Anderson, Nick's abusive father, is shot to death in his filthy trailer. Suddenly, Nick is gone-leaving Alix alone, confused and pregnant. For the next fifteen years she wrestles with the pain of Nick's abandonment, a bad marriage, her family and friends. But finally, she's starting to get her life back together. Her divorce is almost final, her business is booming, and she's content if not happy -- until the day she looks up and sees Nick standing across the counter. He's back...and he's not alone. Once again Alix is plunged into turmoil and pain as Nick tries to win her love, something she resists with all her strength. Only one thing might break the protective wall she's built around her emotions-the truth about Frank Anderson's death. But when that truth comes out and those walls crumble, neither Alix nor Nick is prepared for the emotional explosion that could destroy as well as heal

This book, oh this book. There is really not even enough words that can explain just how much I love this book. It took me forever to start it because let's face it, I'm a cover whore and the cover pushed me far far away from this book. A friend told me to read it so I decided to just dive in. I never expected the whirlwind of emotions that is the sweet gum tree.

The book has two parts to it, part 1 is such a breath of fresh air for me as it goes through her childhood and me being from the south, I grew up much like her. So for that alone it hit home for me. It took me back to days of working on cars with my grandpa and helping my grandma can veggies. It was nostalgic for me.

You follow through the course of her life and the amazing Nick. You see their friendship bloom into this amazing thing but one day they wake up and they realize they are not little 8 year olds anymore and their feelings are anything but 'friendly' and have now turned to lust. So what happens when you fall in love with the person you called best friend?? Well.... then part 2 happens and let me tell you, I was not expecting the amount of pure, raw emotion that part 2 caused me.

Alix and Nick have now grown into adults and shit really gets crazy. My mouth dropped, then my heart shattered, and at one point I was scared that it would never be ok again but the author made me whole again.

This is a story of life and love. Not just any love, a once in a lifetime love, a love you never recover from. I climbed into the pages of The Sweet Gum Tree expecting an ok read and when I finished it, I truly felt as if I was a better person for reading it. Amazing and Breathtaking. 5 Stars from me.

"He was always someone. Because the core of the sweet gum tree never changes. Like Nick, the deep red wood stays true to it's nature. Strong, steady, and pure."

Review of Flat Out Celeste by Jessica Park

Leia's Review:

In a literary world overcrowded with billionaire CEO’s and powerful alpha males, Flat-Out Celeste was a breath of fresh air.
As an avid Jessica Park fan, I have been in love with Celeste since Flat-Out Love.  Finding out that she was going to get her own book had me running around like a lunatic. I am so happy to report that in no way, shape, or form did Mrs. Park disappoint! This book was brilliant!

Flat-Out Celeste begins with Celeste as a senior in high school.  Even at 18, Celeste still has her oddities.  Although she is no longer carrying around Flat Finn, she has closed herself off from interaction with other students.  Submersed in her studies and planning her attendance to an Ivy League School, socializing isn’t something that is on the top of her priority list – especially considering prior events of not-so-nice students.

Celeste receives an email from Justin, the reach-out student for Barton College – a no name college in San Diego that isn’t even on her radar.  After an inbox overflow of random emails from Justin, Celeste decides to respond.  This sparks a back and forth “pen-pal” relationship between the two.  Celeste deems this relationship safe since she has no plans of ever meeting the mysterious Justin….but when he shows up unannounced surprising both family and her suppressed teenage tendencies, Celeste and Justin embark on one of the most loveable romances I have ever had the pleasure of reading.

There are so many reason why I love this book, it would be impossible to list them all.  But just for a minute, I want you to think back – to when you were 15, 16, 17…. however old….. and remember the innocence of just – dating – the butterflies and constant smiles. The immense happiness you experience when hearing or seeing your crush’s name.  The swoonworthy moments you remember, even now as adult.  That is how this entire book felt to me.  It was steady smiles and absolutely heartwarming moments. Pure beauty.

“Why are you nervous?”
“Because I’m going to kiss you, and I better do a good job because I want you to like it.”
“I feel sure that I will.”“How could you know that?” “Because it is you.”

This isn’t just a story of Celeste and Justin’s romance though.  It is so much more.  There is more Matt and Julie – which made my heart swell with joy.  It’s also about Celeste as a person.  Her growing into a beautiful woman and learning to accept the things about herself that society has told her are all wrong.  That’s a hard lesson for anyone to learn.  And I think on some level, everyone experiences that – trying to figure out where you belong and how to be accepted for who you are.  It’s wonderful to see an author celebrate the things that make us different, the things that make up our individuality – whether society accepts them or not.

5 stars just doesn't seem like enough for a book that impacted me so deeply.  I’ve said it before and I will say it again, Jessica Park’s writing is so subtly brilliant.  You don’t even know when it happens, but you soon realize that you are so invested in the lives of these characters that you won’t be complete until they are happy.  I loved every moment of Flat-Out Celeste and I would recommend this series time and again to anyone who would listen.

5 Flat-Out Brilliant Stars!

Review: Confessions of a Litigation God, by Sawyer Bennett

Confessions of a Litigation God
By Sawyer Bennett
5 Stars

Matt fucking Connover.

Litigation god.

King of one night stands.

Matt Connover is an expert when it comes to oral skills, in a court room he has perfected the ability to make a witness squirm in their seat, using finesse and charm to win over a jury, get a confession and win his cases. Outside of the court room he uses his perfected oral skills between a woman’s legs to make her squirm and cry out in ecstasy, making them come quickly or drag it out for his pleasure. He’s good and knows it.

Matt’s motto fuck em and leave em, works well for him. His divorce was nasty, and the hurt and betrayal he felt and still carries around with him, keeps him from wanting a relationship again. He loved deeply once and had his heart eviscerated. He will never put himself in that position again.  He has no interest in a relationship beyond sex, which is why One Night Only  a secret exclusive club works well for him. Using fake names, and the no strings attached philosophy, Matt can go on pick his next fuck, from a variety of women who are all searching for the same thing; Sex.

Searching one day he comes across a new woman on the sight with stunning green eyes. He can tell immediately that she is smart confident and just the woman he wants to spend his night with, but only one night. Meeting Stella, Matt knows that there is something different about this woman he can’t place his finger on it but after spending an amazing night enraptured in pleasure, with more orgasms than can be counted, they part ways never to see each other again, yet Matt can’t get his mind off her.

Come Monday morning, Matt and his partner have acquired a sinking law firm and are meeting with the attorney and her associate attorney to welcome them to the firm, when who should walk in but Stella the woman who he has been fantasizing about for days, aka McKayla ‘Mac’ Dawson, his new attorney.
Never having been in this situation before, Matt is pissed, he feels the control of his world slipping from him. The more time he spends with Mac, the more he wants her and she apparently wants him too. Engaging in a forbidden affair Matt struggles with his feelings, knowing that Mac is a seriously special woman, perfect in his mind, however he refuses to trust another woman, regardless of how amazing the sex is or the feelings she's creating. Matt continues to fight his attraction and his feelings, giving in at a point but shutting himself down again truly believing that nothing good can from a relationship with Mac, his perfect girl.

Mac knows the real Matt, she sees who he is and understands the way he is but still craves more. She is strong and knows what she wants and she want’s Matt. She is patient and willing to wait for Matt to give her what she wants and when he offers to try she is thrilled thinking that she may have finally broken down some of the walls he has put up. However when Matt’s ex-wife destroys a weekend with Matt and his son, Mac watches as Matt builds his walls back up, and pushes her away. Finally deciding she has to do what’s best for her, she gives Matt a piece of her mind and sets her plan in motion to walk out of his firm and life forever.
With her decision made, Matt spends his remaining time with her trying to keep it professional and keep her as a friend. However when Mac accompanies him on a business trip he starts to question everything he has told himself since his divorce and with one last night together,  they spend it worshiping one another as their final goodbye. When morning comes Matt seeks some advice from his father and with the wise words; ‘In my opinion, unaccomplished people only consider the risks, not the rewards. Son, you are not an unaccomplished man.’ Matt must decide if the risk of trusting Mac with his already fragile heart is worth the reward of loving and being loved by the perfect woman.

Dee's Review
***This book was fan-freaking-tastic. The story is the same as the Legal Affairs series only told in Matt’s Point of View with several added scenes. We get to find out exactly what goes on inside his head and let me tell you it’s awesome. This book made me laugh, cry and squirm. The sexual tension in this book is just as hot as the sex and that’s saying something because the sex is pretty freaking hot. I loved reading this story from Matt’s POV something about the way he thinks and feels is just so raw and at times so heartbreaking. I loved it. Sawyer Bennett did an amazing job telling Matt’s side of the story and I loved the extras in this book. Took me less than 34 hours to read the whole book, I couldn't put it down and was getting extremely irritated when I had too. Excellent!!! I recommend this to anyone who has read the Legal Affairs series or if you just need a really hot man, who knows how to please a woman, is stubborn, sexy, brilliant, a little broken, but will still capture your heart, then read this book. I promise you won’t be disappointed.***

Blog Stop and Review- Tempt my heart by Danielle Jamie

Title: Tempt My Heart
Author: Danielle Jamie
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: May 2 2014

Brittan McKenna’s life was perfect. After getting engaged to her high school sweetheart her happily ever after seemed to be all planned out. However after 9/11 her fiancée drops out of college to enlist; Brittan’s life takes a swift turn. After enjoying a heartfelt reunion with Cane when he returned from his first tour, her joy was short lived as tragedy struck. Cane was killed in the line of duty during his second tour in Iraq. However after years of longing and pining for her dearly deceased, will her heart be able to beat again for another? Will she be able to take a leap of faith?

On the day Cane died, Brittan believed her heart had died along with him.......or so she thought until her passion for music causes her to blaze a new trail testing fate and “tempting tomorrow”.

Eight years marks the anniversary of Cane’s death when Brittan sets eyes upon Jordon; a guitarist whose shrouded in mystery and a world class bad boy for her bands opening act, Tempting Tomorrow. Will he have that spark to set Brittan’s heart a light? Does he have what it takes to win her heart and to make her love again?

Falling for a rock star is a dangerous game, but it’s a hopeless task when you both have hidden demons.

For Jordon love does not exist... not until he meets the lovely Brittan who has the power to tame the untameable beast inside of him.

Will Brittan open her heart to love or will she sabotage the relationship before it even has a chance?

I think my heart just stopped and then started again, as I take in the site of Brittan wearing boy short panties and a tight tee. A ghost of a smile creeps across my lips as her eyes land on mine.
Her mouth makes an O shape and she screams, “Holy shit, Jordon!” while trying to tug her very tiny tee down.
I kick my foot up on my knee and stretch my arms out along the bench seat as I relax against in the booth. Her all of a sudden shyness is adorable and making my dick stir to life in my jeans. I let out a low raspy laugh, “I don’t know why you’re all of a sudden all bashful. It’s not like I haven’t been up close and very personal with what’s under those adorable leopard panties of yours.”
Plopping down across from me she furrows her brows as she snatches the latte from in front of me, “Sorry I’m a little more self-conscious when I’m not drunk.”
“Well with a body like that, you should never feel self-conscious because I swear on this blueberry muffin,” I actually got a small smile out of her with that one, “You have the hottest body to ever grace this earth…and believe me I’ve seen my fair share. So you need to take my word for it.”
Breaking off a piece of her chocolate muffin she’s been nibbling on she chucks the chunk of muffin at my head and lets out the cutest little laugh, “You’re such a pig. But thanks, I guess.”
“You’re welcome. Now that you’re caffeinated is it safe to ask you about last night without being kicked in the baby makers and tossed out on my ass?” I ask as I sip my latte, and prepare myself for a Brittan bitch slap.
Brittan doesn’t speak for a few moments; she just stares down at her muffin while scooping whipped cream off of her latte and licking it off her finger.
Fuck. I am trying to be Mr. Concerned but it’s really hard when she is doing shit that’s making mehard.
Now I know why guys and girls aren’t normally ‘just friends.’

Any one who has read a Danielle Jamie book before, knows that she can write a damn good story and a damn good leading male. She strives to make her stories unique in this world of 'same ole, same ole' so when she asked me to read this book I got excited and Dove right in. First off let me say you will need tissues. You will cry. I was about 10% in when I realized this book is not what I had expected. I was reading along and enjoying the flow and the storyline then BAM she hits me with twist. A twist that had my stomach in knots. I even messaged her saying 'OMG nooo' then my worst fear hit and I was a puddle of broken, shattered tears. Brittan the leading lady suffers through unexplainable heartbreak and loss and loses sight of who she is and what she has become. Yes she has what most artists want and is very famous but shes hollow and follows a path not meant for her. My heart was so sad for her. To have what most people describe as everything only to feel like you have nothing. That is until one day her path crosses with Jordan, a fellow musician. He is sexy and badass and totally has eyes for Brittan. What she thinks is a one time thing suddenly takes a massive turn and Brittan finds herself slowly getting back what she thought she had lost forever. This is all I will say as I don't want to ruin this beautiful story but I will say this is an amazing story of love and loss and how one person who is lost finds her way back. You will totally enjoy this wonderful heartfelt story. 5 heartstrung stars for Tempt my Heart.

Blog Tour Stop and Review - TAINT by S.L Jennings

Right now, you’re probably asking yourself two things:
Who am I?
And, what the hell are you doing here?

Let’s start with the most obvious question, shall we?

You’re here, ladies, because you can’t f*ck.

Oh, stop it. Don’t cringe. No one under the age of 80 clutches their pearls.
You might as well get used to it, because for the next six weeks, you’re going to hear that word a lot. And you’re going to say it a lot.
Go ahead, try it out on your tongue.
F*ck. F***ck.

Ok, good. Now where were we?

If you enrolled yourself in this program then you are wholly aware that you’re a lousy lay. Good for you. Admitting it is half the battle.

For those of you that have been sent here by your husband or significant other, dry your tears and get over it. You’ve been given a gift, ladies. The gift of mind-blowing, wall-climbing, multiple-orgasm-inducing sex. You have the opportunity to f*ck like a porn star. And I guarantee, you will when I’m done with you.

And who am I?

Well, for the next six weeks, I will be your lover, your teacher, your best friend, and your worst enemy. Your every-f*cking-thing. I’m the one who is going to save your relationship and your sex life.

I am Justice Drake.
And I turn housewives into whores.

Now…who’s first?
GOODREADS LINK: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18366077-taint?ac=1

"Taint
v. taint-ed, taint-ing, taints
1. To corrupt morally
2. To sully or tarnish
n
1. a defect or flaw
2. an infecting touch, influence, or tinge
Don't try to define the english language. I can think of a few other things I's like to dirty up
JUSTICE DRAKE"

What can I say? SL Jennings has done it again, she has jumped outside the box and outside the 'norm' to create a story that is so unique and unlike anything else I have ever read. This story is told from the male POV, which I loved and very very well written might I add. She not only (very accurately) got into a man's head, she got into a male sex instructors head and she OWNED it.

This book takes you to the world of Justice Drake, sexy, smart, sophisticated, sex teacher. He turns housewives into whores. He teaches them everything they need to know to make their men happy. These women are all rich, prudish women and he is blunt and crude and he loves every bit of making these women uncomfortable....

"You love the lifestyle you live, and instead of licking your wounds and moving on, you'd rather fix your broken marriage. And I'm here to help you"
"but how?"
A slow sardonic smile unfurls across my face. "I'm going to teach you how to fuck your husband"

As the story line played out, somewhere lines get crossed and Drake ends up falling for an unsuspecting person who is completely off limits. I was curious to see how things were going to play out and how she was going to give this book the ending that I craved and honestly for a long time I was scared but the fear I had was in vein because she gave me all I wanted and more. This story takes some twists and turns that you don't see coming. I was floored literally I couldn't pick my jaw up. This story is hands down one of my favorite for this year. Its different, it's funny, it's hot, and I will admit it had several parts that made me melt because it warmed my heart so much. Oh and that shock factor you get as well. It was beautifully delivered and I loved every moment with JUSTICE DRAKE!

"Feed the beast ladies and it will come to you every time it's hungry."

"I don't want to be in the dark anymore."

This book was great on so many levels but alas I can only give it 5 stars so I say read it, love it, and tell your friends that Justice Drake is coming.....

Review of On The Rocks by Sawyer Bennett

Synopsis:

He left to travel the world for fame and glory, but only after spurning Gabby Ward and crushing her young heart. Now Hunter Markham has come back home to the sand and salty breeze of the North Carolina Outer Banks so he can open up Last Call, a beach bar nestled among the dunes of the Atlantic.

Gabby Ward is not happy that Hunter has returned. Bitter over his rebuff years before, she’s content to stay far away from him and his dangerously charming ways.

Gabby’s well-schemed plans to ignore Hunter go up in flames when he presents an offer to her that she simply can’t refuse, throwing them together in a common quest to each reach their goals. Working together day in and day out proves to be problematic for Gabby, who soon realizes that the feelings she had for him are still very much alive. Hunter struggles to reach through to Gabby’s cold heart, all while starting a new career away from his life as a top ranked, professional surfer.

What starts out as a mutual business arrangement soon turns into a passion that neither of them can continue to deny.

Hard choices lay ahead for both of them when Hunter is offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to return to the pro surfing tour.

Choices that could destroy what they have built or take them further than they ever had dared to hope.

Leia’s Review:

I think it is now fair to say, I have a slight girl crush on Sawyer Bennett.
Every book I read from her just exceeds my expectations and I love it!!
On the Rocks was no different!

On the Rocks is the heart-happy story of Gabby and Hunter.
Gabby has been in love with Hunter since, well, forever.  And on her graduation night, Gabby puts the moves on Hunter to let him know how she feels.  Hunter shuts her down quickly, effectively breaking her heart (and mine).

Fast-forward 5 years and Hunter has taken an “early retirement” from his professional surfing career because his twin brother, Brody, is being released from prison. He heads home to the Outer Banks opening Last Call, a local bar.

Gabby, still reeling from the heartbreak of Hunter Markham, has also returned home to the Outer Banks after her father passed away.  She is trying her hardest to keep the family construction business alive, but that’s a hard job considering she is a female in a male dominated profession.  But Gabby, she is fierce! Sucking up her heartbreak – she puts in a bid to refurbish Last Call.

As they start working together, Hunter starts to realize that even though he wasn’t able to be in a relationship with Gabby 5 years ago, maybe the time is right now.  But convincing her of the same thing is going to be difficult, because he has hurt her before and she’s not ready to open herself up to hurt again.

“Hunter Markham has the ability not to just hurt me.  He is a man that could destroy me.”

And with the pressures of his brother not being the same person he was, a new career as a bar owner and his agent constantly nagging him to get back on the Surf Tour – Hunter has his plate FULL.  As they navigate through trying to heal past wounds and develop a relationship, they encounter their fair share of ups and downs.  What I love about their relationship though? It’s so….just real. I mean, after the initial shock wears off on Gabby – they have an actual adult relationship where they can count on each other.  Where they try to put the other person first.  They trust each other and love each other deeply. I mean…just….. here, look:

“Taking my hand, Hunter resumes our walk, his hand holding onto me a little more tightly.  ‘What team are you on, Gabby?’
‘I’m on your team, baby.  I’m on the team that makes Hunter happiest.’”

See? I LOVE THEM!

This story is so wonderful.  The flow is perfect. The story is witty, romantic and has plenty of spice.  It’s just so well balance and well written…..you can’t help but be immersed in the story. Do yourself a favor, and start this series. It is definitely one I will be re-reading!

5 Stars!!

Until a few days ago, her budding relationship with Captain Riedwaan Faizal seemed to be going very well indeed - but she knows she is not the only woman in his life - As the two women trace older crimes that may be related to the recent killings, they soon realise that nothing is as it seems. And as Riedwaan comes to join Clare, to help with the investigation and to try to salvage their relationship, it soon becomes clear that it is more than just their feelings that is in danger. In fact their lives - and the lives of others - are now at stake.
